NCAA Award Offers Graduate Scholarship Money
The NCAA and corporate partner Capital One have joined forces to create a new award in Division I athletics - the Capital One Cup. A news conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday in New York City. Similar to the Director's Cup, the top all-around programs in men's and women's sports will each receive $200,000 in graduate scholarship money. Previously, the men's and women's sports were combined with one overall winner. Points will be awarded in 13 men's sports and 13 women's sports. Twenty points will be awarded to each national champion with descending points awarded to each of the next nine finishers.

BYU Going Independent In Football, To WCC In Other Sports
-BYU is going independent in football, after all. BYU says it is leaving the Mountain West Conference and will go independent in football while joining the West Coast Conference in all other sports in the 2011-2012 school year. BYU and its new conference announced the moves in simultaneous releases late Tuesday afternoon, saying further details would be given at a news conference Wednesday at BYU's LaVell Edwards Stadium. The announcement ended nearly two weeks of speculation since BYU's original plan to go independent surfaced, then unraveled within hours when the Mountain West Conference made a protective move and invited Nevada and Fresno State to leave the WAC for the MWC.

Football. UMD Moves Up Spot In Latest D-II Poll
Fresh off of their 35-10 opening week victory over then-No. 5 Central Washington, Minnesota-Duluth moves up one spot to No. 3 in this week's AFCA Division II Coaches' Top 25 Poll and received one first place vote. Northwest Missouri State still holds the top spot, garnering 23 first place votes, followed by Grand Valley State at No. 2, North Alabama at No. 4 and California (Pa.) rounding out the Top 5.
