    Douglas Jones-US PRESSWIRE

Player of the year – Austin Smith, Colgate

Smith had 36 goals this year to lead the nation, and they were just 5 fewer than the other two Hobey hat trick finalists combined. Smith scored 25 goals in conference play, 12 more than the next highest total. To contrast, the other leading scorers won their league scoring titles by 5, 3, 2 and 1. Smith also had under 20% of his goals come on the power play and, though I am not a fan of crediting players for context, had an equal number of game winning and game tying goals as he did power play tallies. Smith helped drag a Colgate team picked to finish near the bottom in ECAC Hockey to a fourth place finish in the league, and to top it all off Smith was one of the better forwards in the country at playing in his own end as well.

Coach of the year – Norm Bazin, UMass-Lowell

Bob Daniels was very close, as he helped lead Ferris State all the way to the title game in their first Frozen Four appearance. But Bazin led Lowell to 24 wins and a second place finish in Hockey East after a last place finish and just 5 wins last season. Lowell had seven players who scored 10 or more goals in 2011-12 after having four the year before.

Rookie of the Year – Joey LaLeggia, Denver

I went back and forth between he and Gaudreau for rookie of the year before LaLeggia, who was 6th among rookies in ppg despite playing defense. LaLeggia scored a point per game in WCHA play, joining the following  defensemen since 2005-06.

    Justin Schultz

    Brendan Smith

    Jamie McBain

    Matt Carle

That’s three Hobey candidates and a Hobey winner. LaLeggia is the only Freshman defenseman to do it in that time frame, and one of only a handful of Freshmen, forward or defenseman, to do it in that timeframe. What’s more is that LaLeggia hasn’t been drafted. Some team is going to get a major steal this summer.

  • Thursday’s College Baseball Top-50 Scoreboard & Wrapup
Scores & More Presented By Baseballtips.com ... Indiana State (cb360 #31) - despite being picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference (behind Missouri State, Creighton and Wichita State) - clinched the MVC regular-season title with two games still to play, following Friday’s 6-3 win over visiting Missouri State (cb360 #39). Another conference-title showdown (#11 Rice at #18 UCF) was one of five games rained out or suspended on Thursday that involved  top-50 teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings, but 23 other top-50 games were played and the favorites won 70% (16-7). front-page photo courtesy of Indiana State Thursday’s eight head-to-head matchups between cb360 top-50 teams produced yet another upset loss for #1 Florida State (10-5 vs. visiting #14 North Carolina State), as FSU now is 1-4 over the past 11 days. Elsewhere in key matchups, Mississippi State ace Chris Stratton picked up his 10th win of the season in a 3-1 victory for the #36 Bulldogs over SEC regular-season title contender Kentucky (#9). Surging #49 Vanderbilt moved two games over .500 with a 3-0 win at #26 Mississippi. #2 Florida’s 6-0 win at Auburn kept the SEC race a 4-team battle - as the Gators are 17-11 and Kentucky 18-10, while #8 [...]
  • College Baseball Composite Rankings #14
The May 16 CNR Top-50, Presented By Dugouthats.com ... As has been noted throughout the national baseball media over the past few days, there was little movement at top of the various polls and projections over the past week - but plenty of significant shuffling in the crucial “bubble” territory for potential NCAA qualification. Note that this update to the CB360 Composite National Rankings (CNR) is a bit of a hybrid, as the 16-element formula includes polls that were released on Monday (May 14), NCAA projections that came out the following day (May 15, after a couple key Mon. games), and then various RPI-type factors that reflect games played through Wed. (May 16; official NCAA RPI only reflects games through May 13). front-page photo courtesy of Vanderbilt There are three returners (each of them NCAA bubble teams) to the CNR top-50, while the same teams occupy the top-3 spots but in a slightly different order (Florida State still #1, Florida back to #2 and Baylor slipped to #3). Oregon has surged from #9 to #4, one spot ahead of UCLA (up from #6) while current #6 North Carolina also bumped up one spot. Scroll down for more detailed info. on the most-recent CNR [...]

  • Tuesday’s College Baseball Key-Games Scoreboard & Wrapup
Scores & More Presented By Baseballtips.com ... Tuesday night started with Purdue (cb360 #10) rallying to score in the 9th & 10th for a 2-1 win over Missouri Valley leader #31 Indiana State - and the drama continued to build, with plenty of upsets, fantastic finishes and all-around significant results in the big picture that is college baseball RPI, seeding position, etc. Typically on these CB360 Scoreboard wrapup pages, we include an action photo for each game that was a key head-to-head matchup or produced a noteworthy upset. Of the 36 games that were played on Tuesday, 14 results fit into those categories (a very high number for midweek - plus we had the FSU at Clemson doubleheader on Monday, see bottom of page). The night was significant on a number of levels, ranging from the end of cb360 #43 Utah Valley’s 32-game winning streak (visiting Utah held on for the 11-10 win) to five different SEC teams being upset, by teams from the Ohio Valley (2), SoCon, Sun Belt and Southland conferences. front-page photo courtesy of Samford (note - the CB360 Composite National Rankings top-50 was updated on May 16 and those rankings now have been integrated into this page). • Louisville Makes Montrezl Harrell's Short List

Former Virginia Tech signee Montrezl Harrell finally received his release from the Hokies on Thursday, meaning he's eligible to sign with a new school and begin his college career this fall.

According to Harrell's father, the four-star recruit is currently looking at five schools: Louisville, Kentucky, Florida, NC State and Alabama.

The first issue that needs to be addressed here is this: U of L could really use Harrell. He's a skilled power forward with a Big East-ready body who could be a reliable backup to Chane Behanan at the four. His addition would also allow Angel Nunez to shift over to the three, a spot which seems like his natural position.

    Montrezl-harrell_medium

But then there's the whole, "oh yeah, we don't have any available scholarships" deal.

Louisville is interested in Harrell, and if he decides that he wants to become a Cardinal, my understanding is that he won't be turned away. This leaves us with two possibilities as to how Harrell could end up donning the red and black on scholarship.

    1) Terry Rozier fails to qualify. This is the cleanest route, but it also seems improbable given that the status of Rozier - who will be taking summer courses in an attempt to become eligible - likely won't be known until a few weeks before the start of the fall semester. Harrell's decision will almost surely come well before Rozier's status is known with any degree certainty.

    2) A scholarship player gives up his free ride or chooses to transfer. The only player with whom there's been any speculation in this regard is Rakeem Buckles, who is sitting out next season to repair his torn ACL. Multiple people have pitched the idea of Buckles, a Miami native, following Richard Pitino to Florida International. As far as I know, this is a scenario without any actual substance.

Of course this is all meaningless if Harrell picks another school, but I do think it is intriguing that U of L is pursuing him given its scholarship situation. Certainly something worthy of keeping an eye on.

  • Louisville Tops Post-Spring Big East Rankings

ESPN's Andrea Adelson has updated her Big East rankings for the first time since spring football wrapped, and she's still going with the Cards as the league favorites heading into the 2012 season.

    1. Louisville: Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater looked better than ever this spring, giving me renewed confidence the Cardinals are going to be the preseason favorite in the league. The secondary should be exceptionally strong, and the offensive line should be better. Questions remain at running back and with depth in the front seven. But of all the teams in the league, I think the Cardinals have the most stability headed into the season. Plus, it hugely helps to have Charlie Strong entering Year 3.

Adelson did shake things up a touch, surprisingly putting South Florida at No. 2, followed by Rutgers and Cincinnati.

    DePaul remained unranked.

Louisville commit Anton Gill is up to No. 32 in the latest Scout.com Top 100 for the class of 2013, which was released earlier today.

Gill is also just six spots below the cut-off between four-star and five-star players on the list.

It's been said plenty of times already, but this recruiting class is an enormous one for U of L.

  • 2011 Louisville Football Clothing And Merchandise On Sale

This is probably worth keeping an eye on.

The University of Louisville equipment department will sell discounted football clothing and merchandise at its camp store on June 6-10 and June 13-17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The staff will sell clothing from the 2011 football season in front of the Trager Center, while the football staff conducts their annual football camps.

T-shirts, hats, shorts, pull-overs and other football clothing will be on sale to the general public.

There is no amount of money I would not pay for this:

I'd have to start wearing "night shirts" again for the first time since I was five, but the best things in life demand sacrifice.

  • The Waters Of Lexington Turn Infra-Red

So the powers that be in Lexington attempted to die the water in their downtown fountains pink today in support of breast cancer awareness. Instead, the dye was somehow "messed up," and the water throughout the city's downtown area now appears a suspiciously familiar shade of red.

  • ITB Shorts Episode 8

Yesterday we hit on picking a quarterback, today we're going to stay "on the field" so to speak and talk about something else that I've always found interesting in the college football space: position changes. Prentiss Wagner at Tennessee and Malcolm Mitchell at Georgia are two of the more notable position moves on the college football landscape. Ricky Barnum and Barrett Jones are making moves on the offensive line for Michigan and Alabama. However, the move that really spurred this happened a year ago; Kenny Tate to linebacker for the Maryland Terrapins. Tate's looking to return healthy in 2012 and the Terps are keeping him at linebacker.

Each move is unique in and of itself, but there is a wide angle view as a player shifts to do what's best for his team but not always himself. Some moves are more seamless than others and today we'll look at what they entail and how much work it actually is to change positions.

OH! And yes, I hit on the whole "Mike Vrabel, smokeless tobacco violation" thing.

Taking a break from the Florida State, Big XII, Conference expansion stuff to look at some actual football. Bill O'Brien at Penn State has decided that very soon he will name a starting quarterback. Whether it is Paul Jones, Matt McGloin or Rob Bolden is a moot point; he's doing the smart thing by picking one guy to lead his squad through the summer and into fall. Mike Gundy already made a similar move by naming Wes Lunt his starter after spring ball and today we're going to talk about why this is something that only helps your ball club.

Quarterback "battles" suck. They suck for the coaches. They suck for the team. They suck a lot when they are the focus of training camp. Spring is where positions get won and lost. There is no preseason college football, when your guys get to campus in August they are there to get in tip top shape and prepare for the upcoming season. An elongated quarterback battle slows down this preparation process. People think that at some point in August these quarterbacks that are globbed together in a push for one spot are going to clearly separate themselves; they're not. These players are going to be lumped together, they will have good days and bad days; just like they had good spring games and bad spring games.

Ultimately the message here is simple: Pick a guy. Get him fully prepped from a leadership, gameplan, rapport standpoint for game one. If he doesn't work, go with the back-up and let him be the guy. A prolonged battle leaves two players underprepared and that does not help the team as a whole.

  • ITB Shorts Episode 6

A great article over at Tomahawk Nation that breaks down the viewership valuation of football versus basketball and where the ACC teams stand based upon television draw. Definitely worth a read and it is the opening point of discussion here on the Shorts today. It seems, at least in 2011, that Florida State is the most valuable property from an eyeballs standpoint and while they are not runaway kings of the television set the fact is they have a right to feel like they are carrying a large portion of the ACC's load when it comes to TV sets. So what does it all mean? With a team that's trying to run down Florida, Georgia, Auburn and Alabama on the recruiting trail, money is pretty damn important and they most certainly should explore options.

We also take a quick second to comment on the barely hanging on $2,000 stipend debate. Financially challenged schools are fighting to keep relief out of their athletes hands; all for the sake of not allowing a school that can afford it to help their kids out. Really just shows the self-centered drive when it comes to schools and the divide that is very real between the haves and have nots. We'll keep eyes on this because while the four-team playoff thing is great to stroke off fans, this is something that can actually help the sport.

The college football bubble is swelling. FBS teams like UT-San Antonio, Texas State and South Alabama have decided to step up to the big plate. Now Liberty is seeking to do the same. My guy, Kyle Kensing over at Saturday Blitz, wrote a pretty compelling article about this "boom" mentality and the idea that they can get more money by getting to the FBS level. Ultimately it boils down to sustainability and if you have not seen recently, FBS football does not exactly sustain itself. It takes money, lots of it, to field a team; and even more to field a consistent winner.

So how do you regulate it? How do you save schools from themselves and their own delusions of grandeur? Right now, you can't. You need smart athletic directors; like at Appalachian State and Villanova. Men who realize the expanded travel for all programs and increased scholarships are a cost that can cripple an athletic department. It ultimately is not fair to the schools or to the programs to push for a goal that they will never reach.

We're podcasting folks! Today's topic? We've got Florida State set up on a platter. If you were like me this weekend, totally disconnected and enjoying your real life (I was at a dope ass wedding in Albemarle!), then let me catch you up with some articles. Here's the Andy Haggard bomb that started the Florida State is upset firestorm. Then, Randy Spetman the Florida State AD came out and towed the "We're happy in the ACC" line, as he was supposed to. Plus the head coach, Jimbo Fisher, let us know he's all about doing what's best for the Seminoles, and if that's the Big Twelve then do it.

So, now you're caught up. Dan Wetzel at Yahoo! wrote a good piece on the Noles and getting the most bang for their buck. In this short I try to look at both sides of the coin. One, it must be recognized that Florida State is in a unique position where the cash matters a lot more than it does to most other ACC schools. That cannot be discounted and if they can get more elsewhere than by all means they should explore that option. However, it must also be noted that had Florida State won a bit more then perhaps the contract would look a bit different from a financials standpoint.

We've got Jim Delany up on the shorts today folks. Yesterday at the mothership I took a spin on Delany's new plan about not allowing non-division winners into the four-team playoff. The head man for the B1G has 2011 Alabama squarely in his sights and he is aiming at the SEC to make sure this never happens again. We get it Jim, you have a legitimate fear for what happens if the Southeastern Conference keeps having a couple of the best teams in the nation.

Delany talks resume and scheduling but never discusses the actual best teams. Nick Saban has a response to the commissioner's idea about champions playing and it is a simple one: "Hell No." People want to see the best teams and to ignore that would be ignoring the reason behind this playoff push. Evaluating teams is an active science, not a passive one. Active means film evaluation then tweaking and re-tweaking based upon on-field play. That does not mean looking at a resume and just picking who is the best off of a computer print out. Hopefully more people will realize this as we go forward.

The ACC just agreed to a revamped media deal with ESPN. The deal is for $3.6 billion over 15 years and gives the Worldwide Leader exclusive rights to all ACC contests on a first, second and third tier basis. Some folks reacted as though the league has finally made it big. Others were beyond disappointed as they looked at the numbers and saw more of the same. Today, I take a quick spin around the podcast to give some thoughts on the new media deal.

From where I sit, the deal is good but not great. It closes the gap but does not eliminate it by any means. But, ultimately it is the bed the ACC has made for itself and while Florida State and Clemson want for more, the on the field product has to warrant the pay out and it has not.

Enjoy the show folks and if you have topics or questions send them into me via twitter.

Aldarius JohnsonIt's been a long time, but we're back on the air waves. I've been looking for a way to continue to bring the podcast while handling the duties at the mothership and finally arrived at this solution: short daily takes for the people. I'm still going to pick up the guests going forward but right now I've had a need to podcast and this is a way to take a lot of what I've been writing about and spin it into something you all can consume on the reg.

First up, we've got the new rule at Miami. Here's the take from Your Best 11 and on the show I get into why I don't like the rule or the rule's provisions to thwart talking to agents. I also give some quick thoughts about the "Should We Ban College Football" debate that took place last night. If you have not watched the debate, you can find that two hour video here. It is an, um, interesting watch and one that I hope my readers and listeners are better prepared for than the average Joe; a lot of it is stuff we've already covered here at ITB.

Oh, and we're on Stitcher Radio now people!

  • ESPNTriangle & 620 The Buzz: ACC vs SEC In The NFL Draft Plus We're Talking Playoffs

CoplesThings are still rocking and rolling at the mothership but we've got a Tuesday treat for you all via the radio waves and the miracles of podcasting. I joined The Insiders, Mark Thomas and Mike Maniscalco, to talk about the ACC, the SEC and the NFL draft. The ACC is not devoid of all talent but even as the league's NFL draft pick numbers remain among the nation's best, the teams cannot get wins on the field. Obviously I have a brilliant plan on how to fix this, it involves a time machine and will never happen.

Then, of course, we talk about the most recent development on the college football landscape. A PLAYOFF IS COMING AND OMG IT IS GOING TO BE SO FREAKING TOTALLY AWESOME AND BETTER THAN EVERYTHING EVER!! Have a listen as I thrust and parry my way to not embracing this change for anything but more ways to complain about college football for everyone. Mark my words people, you will not be happy!

But in all seriousness, there are some issues that still exist and playoff or not they need to be addressed before we can call this next step a solution. As always, a great time on ESPN Triangle with the guys from 620 The Buzz.

Thanks to my man Josh Goodson for getting me the audio so quickly.

  • Some Thoughts On UNC's Spring Game

Bryn RennerFinally got a little time to get around to this UNC post, if you didn't know folks the kid has been working like crazy. For starters, yes, I went to the game. Sat in 107-ish for a good little sideline view. Some nice ladies sat next to us and they asked me football questions and I was answering them. Got to sit with Jonathan Jones from Carolina Blue and Erin Summers from WRAL too. Here is an overview and the stats if you're interested in those type things.

The first take away from the game as they came out and got started was the size, or lack thereof. The team is noticeably smaller, especially on the lines. That's a product of two things; the strength and conditioning program design and the actual practices themselves. Fedora has changed from the NFL styled practices that UNC has had, well since forever, and gone with a similar practice scheme to what Meyer has implemented at Ohio State, what Chip Kelly uses at Oregon and the like. Less standing around for the back ups, more reps for everyone and a lot more conditioning done during the drills themselves.

Some folks like this, some don't. In principle, for me, I'm not a fan of it. I like the pro styled approach of heavy reps for the ones, less for the twos and so on; but to be fair both are great ways to practice when you can get the desired goal.
